It’s The End of The World as We Know It…..

end of the world *Updated 12/18/2012 – Three days before the end of the world again according to the Mayan Calendar.

I think I can safely say that none of what I wrote below has changed.

Happy Holidays everyone! 🙂

So the talk of “The Rapture” has been running rampant around the internet and media for the last little while.  There have always been many opinions about when the world is going to end.  I personally do not have an opinion one way or another.  When and if the world does end, I’ve always (not sure why) thought of it as something that will happen in the distant future, long past the existences of myself and my family, children and grandchildren.

I have never been one to believe what these “crackpots” that supposedly have a direct line to God himself have been saying:  The world is going to end on May 21, 2011 at 6pm.  Or October 2011 now.  Or maybe December 21, 2012.  I believe that when the world is going to end, it is going to end, and no mortal soul on earth knows when that will be.  Whether as Christians believe, the Rapture will happen, or perhaps as some atheists believe, that we will just continue to exist, until either war or natural disaster or our own stupidity with the way we treat the environment will wipe us out.  I certainly am not going to bet the farm on a certain day, and spend or donate all my money, sell everything I have, quit my job, only to find out on the day after that everything is as it was the day before.

Watching the news lately, it’s easy to believe that the end is coming.  Between earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, volcanoes, it seems like the earth on which we live is rebelling against us.  Humans, pitted against nature are pitifully powerless.  We can build walls, shelters, barriers, etc, but if Mother Nature comes knocking at the door, she keeps on knocking until the damn house falls down if she wants in bad enough.  There is no doubt that there has been an upswing in the number of events that have happened in the last decade or so.  Or perhaps because we live in such an information age, with tools like Facebook, Twitter, online news sites, RSS feeds, etc, we know everything that is going on around the world as it happens.  A far cry from when we just used to get our local news from the 6 o’clock local news broadcast.

Many religious people believe in living their lives as though the end of the world, The Rapture, the second coming, the first coming, whatever is going to happen at any minute.  There is almost a fear that if they don’t, they will be left behind when the big event happens.  I believe in God, born and raised a Roman Catholic.  Doesn’t it stand to reason though that whether we are believers or not, that we should live our lives as though today is our last day on earth?  Not just because we are afraid of what will happen to us in the afterlife, but because our lives on earth will be so much richer that way.

Take the opportunities you’re given.  Love people properly, treat people properly.  Shower affection on our children – don’t let them go to sleep one night where they aren’t absolutely sure that they are the most loved person on the planet, all the while teaching them the values to be good people, because today just might be our last day on the planet.  We just never know.  If we live our lives with no regrets and we live to be a ripe old age and die of natural causes, then we have nothing to be sorry for.  If the world and everything as we know it ends tomorrow, we still have nothing to be sorry for.

I wouldn’t close your bank account just yet.  Because even if the world does end tomorrow, or in October, or in 2012, I have a feeling that we’re not going to need the money where we’re going anyway…but just in case it doesn’t, might as well be safe. 😉
